District Wellness Policy Summary

Recent increases in diabetes and obesity indicate declining health outcomes for current and future generations through obesity related health conditions.  As a result of these trends, legislators have enacted legislation aimed at affecting healthy behavioral change in students through Local Wellness Policies in schools and by the restriction of certain foods and beverages served in schools. The purpose of this committee is to make a collaborative effort to design a Local School Wellness Policy incorporating legislative changes while embracing a school environment conducive to healthy lifestyle choices and healthier life outcomes.  Nutrition Services invites you to make a difference in our student’s futures by supporting the Local School Wellness Policy and our mission statement “Nutrition & Learning Hand-In-Hand”.

Child Nutrition Programs were re-authorized by Congress July 2004.  Part of the new law requires all school districts that participate in the National School Lunch Program have local wellness policies adopted and implemented by July 1, 2006.  The new law specifies that at a minimum, local policies should include:

  • Goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that are designed to promote student wellness in a manner that the district determines are appropriate.

  • Nutrition guidelines selected by the district for all foods available on each campus during the school day, with the objective of promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity.

  • Provides an assurance that the district’s guidelines for reimbursable school meals will not be less restrictive than federal regulations and guidance.

  • Establishes a plan for measuring implementation of the policy, including the designation of one or more persons at each school charged with operational responsibility for ensuring that the district wellness policy is implemented.

In addition, recent California legislation changed the Education Code to reflect new stringent requirements for all foods and beverages available on campus.  Districts are required to monitor, evaluate, and report results on a regular basis.  Each school site has a copy of specific guidelines for their grade level. Please contact your cafeteria manager, principal or myself if you have any questions.
